India's telecom sector is drawing strong investor interest following the stock market debut of Jio Platforms, prompting market experts to compare the growth potential, valuations, and financial stability of the industry's three major players.

Expert Views on Jio and Airtel

Ratiraj Tibrewal, CEO of Choice Capital Advisor, notes that Jio Platforms has reset sector benchmarks. With Jio and Bharti Airtel trading at similar valuations, investment choices depend on business preferences. Airtel offers a proven free-cash-flow and ARPU trajectory alongside a diversified footprint in Africa and enterprise, while avoiding post-listing price volatility. Jio brings unmatched scale and digital optionality, though investors might consider accumulating shares on dips as the initial IPO premium settles. Seema Srivastava, Senior Research Analyst at SMC Global Securities, points to Jio's FY26 revenue of ₹ 1,46,885.3 crore and net profit of ₹ 30,049.1 crore, alongside continued subscriber momentum through June 2026. Srivastava highlights that Airtel provides a balanced mix of growth and defensive stability backed by resilient ARPU expansion and steady Q2 FY27 earnings, with a market capitalisation around ₹ 12 lakh crore.

Vodafone Idea and Sector Outlook

Vodafone Idea presents a high-risk turnaround opportunity, with its investment case hinging on financial recovery, network expansion, and potential tariff hikes. Tibrewal mentions that relief on adjusted gross revenue dues, deferred payments, and fresh promoter funding have eased some financial pressure. However, Srivastava notes that Vodafone Idea's net loss widened to ₹ 8,738 crore in Q2 FY27 despite an improved ARPU of ₹ 142, keeping balance sheet strain and AGR liabilities as key challenges.

Context

Telecom investments typically require balancing the steady, predictable cash flows of established operators against the high-growth potential or turnaround risks of newer or recovering market players. Market analysts evaluate these stocks based on customer base scale, average revenue per user, and debt levels to help investors align choices with their risk tolerance.
