British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is keen to visit India and a trip could happen soon, according to Acting British High Commissioner to India Ben Mellor. Mr. Mellor stated on Thursday that Mr. Burnham conveyed his desire to visit India directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a conversation after taking office on July 20.

Economic Ties

Bilateral trade targets are on track to be surpassed, with new deals worth 12 billion pounds recorded since the Free Trade Agreement was signed just over a year ago. India and the U.K. aim to double bilateral trade to around $120 billion by 2030. Indian investors have remained the second-largest source of new investment projects in the U.K. over the past several years, supported further by a recent business delegation of over 200 businesses brought by seven U.K. mayors and one local authority.

U.K. Budget

Measures in the recent U.K. Budget aim to make the British economy predictable and attractive for investment under tight fiscal rules. Chancellor John Healey announced that most U.K. households will benefit from 100 pounds off their energy bills next year to help address cost-of-living pressures. The government plans to reduce borrowing to lower costs, supported by a ready headroom of some 15 billion pounds to deal with future crises.

Context

Diplomatic visits and free trade agreements are standard diplomatic tools used by countries to strengthen economic ties, boost investments, and open up new markets for businesses.
