UPDATE - follow-up to Milk price hiked in Karnataka: The price of Nandini milk in Karnataka will go up by ₹8 per litre starting November 1, 2026. The State Cabinet approved the hike on October 29 after dairy farmers pushed for an increase in the procurement price due to severe drought conditions and rising input costs. Out of the added amount, ₹7 will go directly to farmers, while ₹1 will go to the Karnataka Milk Federation. According to Indian Express - India, minister Krishna Byre Gowda noted that milk producers protested on the streets and cross-party members in the Legislative Council urged action to help growers facing a crisis. The decision had been put on hold earlier because the election code of conduct was in force for Legislative Council polls that ended on October 27. Before the cabinet decision, district milk unions met with Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and former council chairperson Basavaraj Horatti wrote to both him and Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara to warn that steep hikes in essential services would strain poor and middle-class households.
Context
State-run milk federations in India regularly adjust procurement and retail prices to help rural dairy farmers cope with weather shocks like droughts and higher costs for cattle feed. These price changes directly impact household budgets across urban and rural areas alike.
