CWC Demands
The Congress Working Committee has demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral roll tampering. Meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday, the party's top decision-making body passed a resolution stating that nothing short of these resignations can protect the country's Constitution and democracy.
Voter List Concerns
The party called for an immediate halt to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and the restoration of thirteen crore and thirty lakh names it claims were removed. Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi told party leaders that elections have been compromised through electronic voting machines and manipulated voter lists, pointing to recent polls in Karnataka, Haryana, and Maharashtra.
Opposition Strategy
The Congress party held protests across eight hundred districts and plans to take its campaign to the grassroots level with public meetings and rallies. Senior leaders stated that the party will discuss a joint nationwide agitation with other INDIA bloc members at a scheduled meeting in New Delhi.
Context
The Special Intensive Revision is an administrative process where election authorities verify and update voter lists by checking house-to-house details and removing duplicate or ineligible entries. Political parties frequently scrutinize these exercises ahead of major electoral cycles to ensure valid supporters are not mistakenly left off the rolls.
