Representative image · PexelsIndian distance runner Gulveer Singh claimed three medals across four races within a span of five days, securing silver in the 1500 meters and 10,000 meters alongside a bronze in the 5000 meters. This achievement makes him the first Indian to secure three middle and long-distance medals in a single edition of the Asian Games, building on his previous success at the Commonwealth Games where he won a silver in the 10,000 meters and a bronze in the 5000 meters. His coach, Scott Simmons, who oversees his training in Colorado Springs, noted that Gulveer's increased international experience and strong racing intelligence contributed to his performance. Simmons pointed out that Gulveer maintains a strict routine involving heavy training, gym sessions, proper sleep, and careful recovery methods, including easy running and the help of a personal physio for massages and stretching. Operating as a strict vegetarian who relies on plant-based proteins and supplements rather than non-vegetarian food, Gulveer managed the busy schedule after the Athletics Federation of India requested his participation in the 1500 meters event, despite it not being part of his initial plan. Looking ahead, Simmons stated that the athlete will travel to Delhi for celebrations before returning to training to prepare for the upcoming World Championships and the Los Angeles Olympics. Meanwhile, high jumper Pooja Singh secured a bronze medal in the women's high jump with a clearance of 1.84 meters, making her the youngest track and field medallist at the 2026 Asian Games. Although this mark was below her personal best of 1.93 meters, it marked a strong finish to her season following difficult outings at the U20 World Athletics Championships and the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Uzbekistan athlete Barnkhon Sayfullaeva won the gold medal with a jump of 1.90 meters, while Kazakhstan competitor Kristina Ovchinnikova took silver at 1.87 meters. Overall, the Indian athletics team concluded their campaign with a total of 24 medals, which included one gold, nine silver, and 14 bronze.
