India on Tuesday rejected Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's references to Jammu and Kashmir in his United Nations General Assembly speech, calling them unwarranted. Erdogan said that all South Asian disputes, including the Kashmir issue, should be settled through dialogue under the UN Charter. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told a bi‑weekly media briefing that the remarks infringe on India's territorial integrity and sovereignty. He added that no external party has any locus standi on the Kashmir matter. New Delhi has repeatedly asserted that Jammu and Kashmir is, was and will remain an integral part of India. Jaiswal said India will not accept foreign commentary that challenges its claim. The statement was released on September 29, 2026, the same day the UNGA session ended.

Context

Jammu and Kashmir is a Union Territory of India that has long been disputed with Pakistan, making it a sensitive internal issue. India routinely rebuffs external remarks on the territory, citing its sovereignty. UNGA speeches often invite calls for dialogue on contested regions, but India maintains that such matters are for the parties directly involved.
