What Happened

Indian archers Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav won the gold medal in the mixed compound event at the Asian Games in Japan on Wednesday. The pair defeated the Korean duo of Park Jeong-yun and Choi Yonghee in a tense shoot-off after both teams were tied at 157-157 at the end of the fourth round. In the final shoot-off, Chikitha scored a ten, followed by another ten from her Korean opponent, and Sahil secured a close ten before the Korean archer missed, giving India a 20-19 win. This victory earned India its first quota spot for the upcoming LA Olympics in the event, which is making its debut at the Games.

Family Sacrifices

Both athletes overcame major financial struggles to reach this milestone. Chikitha's father, 51-year-old farmer Srinivas Rao from Sultanpur village in Telangana, sold their family rice harvester and took out low-interest loans to buy her equipment and fund training. He even lost 1.5 lakh rupees in a fraudulent equipment purchase before taking a 3.5-lakh-rupee loan for a proper compound bow. Later, government funds provided a new bow, and international archer Abhishek Verma mentored her before she joined the SAI Centre in Sonepat. Chikitha initially trained in karate, earning a black belt that helped her develop the extreme mental stillness and focus needed for archery. Meanwhile, Sahil Jadhav began his career in a summer camp in Maharashtra. His mother sold her jewellery to buy him a compound bow after he shifted from recurve shooting under coach Pravin Sawant. During the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, Sahil's father Rajesh lost his job, forcing the family to rely on his mother's modest teacher's salary until he found lower-paid work months later. Sahil later joined the SAI National Centre of Excellence in Kolkata and won titles at the senior nationals in 2024 and the World University Games in Germany last year.

Context

Compound archery requires immense upper body strength, precision, and emotional composure under pressure, especially during tight shoot-offs. India's growing success in international archery highlights the dedication of athletes from small towns and rural families who rely on state sports academies and personal sacrifices to break onto the global stage.
