A seventy-year-old former bureaucrat was killed inside his home in the Surajnagar area of Bhopal on Wednesday morning, prompting a massive police search for a newly employed helper who disappeared after the attack. The victim suffered a fatal injury from a sharp tool on his neck, according to law enforcement officials. Additional Commissioner of Police Shailendra Chauhan identified the missing employee, Varun Kumar, as the primary suspect in the case. Investigators noted that the suspect had been recruited just days prior on September twenty-eighth through a placement firm based in Punjab to work as a round-the-clock attendant. Authorities pointed out that the suspect's personal belongings were missing from the property alongside his sudden absence.
The Discovery
The victim's wife woke up during the early hours and discovered her door locked from the outside. She alerted another domestic worker named Rajan Thapa, while the Indian Express reported a helper named Amar also assisted in opening doors. Upon checking the victim's bedroom, family members found his body on the floor and notified the police immediately. Assistant Commissioner of Police Ankita Khatarkar estimated the attack occurred between two and three in the morning. Crime scene experts inspected the premises, gathered physical clues, and checked nearby security camera footage to map the movements of those inside.
Investigation and Motive
Officers responding to the scene discovered a dangerous attempt to cause a massive fire. The kitchen gas cylinder pipe had been pulled apart, leaving the entire house filled with cooking gas when help arrived. Police found multiple wardrobes open inside the residence, suggesting robbery as a potential motive, though other officials noted that confirming a clear motive remains difficult until the main suspect is caught. Several police teams are currently tracking down the Punjab-based agency that arranged the hiring to gather more information on the missing man.
Context
Incidents involving domestic staff turning on elderly employers highlight the security risks households face when background checks are inadequate. Placement agencies operating across state lines often lack proper verification protocols for workers placed in private homes. Police regularly urge citizens to register domestic help with local law enforcement to prevent such violent crimes.
