A Flydubai flight traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia after a violent fight broke out between the pilots in the cockpit. Flight FZ1073 took off from Dubai International Airport early on Wednesday morning carrying around 150 people, most of whom are Israeli. Two hours into the journey, the plane signalled an emergency code on flight tracking website Flightradar24. Minutes later, it briefly switched to a code used to report a hijacking before returning to a general emergency signal. Data shows the aircraft dropped rapidly over Saudi Arabia, descending more than 17,000 feet in less than two minutes just after 05:21 UTC. The plane briefly entered Jordanian airspace at 05:40 before looping back into Saudi Arabia to land at Tabuk Airport in the northeastern part of the country.

Passenger Accounts

A passenger on board described chaotic scenes via text message to Channel 12, stating they heard screams, saw blood after the cockpit was opened, and learned someone had stabbed the pilot with a pocketknife. Israeli passengers and crew members helped restrain an attacker. Another passenger identified as Noam said the pilot was stabbed and seriously wounded, causing the plane to lose control and start a quick dive while people feared for their lives.

Official Response

The Israeli air force dispatched fighter jets in response to the incident, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held urgent consultations. A spokesperson for the prime minister stated the event was not a hijacking and that the situation was under control, with all measures being taken to bring the passengers back to Israel safely. Flydubai confirmed the flight experienced an incident and sent a second aircraft to Tabuk Airport to take the passengers onward to Israel.

Context

Commercial aircraft are designed with reinforced, secure cockpit doors to prevent unauthorized entry during flight. Aviation safety protocols require strict crew coordination, and severe in-flight security incidents are extremely rare events that prompt immediate international response and military coordination.
