Trading on Indian stock exchanges will halt on Friday, October 2, for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, creating a three-day weekend break for the equity segment.

Holiday Schedule

Following the October break, equity trading will shut down again on October 20 for Dussehra, according to the official exchange calendar. Beyond October, the trading calendar includes further closures on November 10 for Diwali, November 24 for Guru Nanak Jayanti, and December 25 for Christmas. Both agricultural and non-agricultural segments on the MCX will also suspend operations during these festival dates, with evening sessions remaining active on specific festival days like Dussehra and Diwali while closing entirely for Christmas and Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti. Special Muhurat Trading sessions are planned for Sunday, November 8, though final schedule timings are still awaited from the exchanges.

Context

Stock exchanges routinely close on public holidays and major festivals to align with national holidays and banking closures. These planned interruptions help brokerages and traders manage settlement cycles around festive periods.
