Toyota plans to launch the 13th generation of the Corolla for the 2028 model year with a fresh set of engine options. While the company did not specifically name the Corolla in its latest announcement, an official graphic showed a car outline that looks just like the Corolla concept car from the Tokyo auto show. The upcoming car line will feature a traditional hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, and a fully electric model, and it may drop the gas-only engine choice entirely.
New Engines
Future Toyota hybrids will run on a newly developed line of 1.5-liter four-cylinder engines built specifically for hybrid setups. These inline-four engines will come in regular and turbocharged versions, and they are smaller and more efficient than older models. They will work alongside fresh electric drive units that combine the electric motor, power control unit, and inverter into lighter and more compact packages. The new naturally aspirated 1.5-liter engine is meant to replace current 1.8-liter four-cylinder and 1.5-liter three-cylinder options.
Design Goals
Toyota is shrinking both the gas engines and electric parts to improve aerodynamics and squeeze out extra driving range for the electric version. Building a smaller hybrid setup also lets Toyota use one shared platform for hybrid and electric variants without changing the car body or interior space. The company aims for over 15 percent better fuel economy thanks to lower mechanical friction, better heat management, lower electrical losses, and a sleeker body. Sharing a single platform across different powertrains also helps Toyota cut production costs and shift factory output to match buyer demand.
Context
Automakers increasingly design shared vehicle platforms to build gas, hybrid, and electric cars on the same assembly lines. This reduces manufacturing expenses and helps car companies adapt quickly when market preferences shift between traditional and electrified models.
