Atlanta Dream beat the Golden State Valkyries 80-69 to force the WNBA Finals into a seventh and deciding game on Sunday. The win breaks a long finals losing streak for the Dream, who previously held a record of zero wins and 10 defeats in the Finals after 3-0 series defeats in 2010, 2011 and 2013.

The Match

The Valkyries entered the game leading the series 3-2. They started slowly and trailed 32-15 at the end of the first quarter, giving the hosts a 46-26 lead at half-time. Golden State star Gabby Williams scored 26 points to finish as the game's top scorer, while Angel Reese led the rebounding charts with 14. Kiah Stokes had previously kept Reese quiet in Game Five, but could not stop her this time. Reese, who joined the Dream after a trade from the Chicago Sky, is in her first season with the team. At 24 years old, her strong play follows a standout performance in Game Two that made her the youngest player, and only the third overall, to record at least 30 points and 15 rebounds in a Finals series. Karl Smesko's side needed a win to keep the series alive.

Venue Changes

Game Six was moved from the 3,500-capacity Gateway Center Arena to the larger State Farm Arena and brought forward to 12:30 local time due to a scheduling clash with the Atlanta Hawks. The Dream previously criticized the change in an open letter, stating that their concerns did not receive proper attention or urgency and that their city deserved the chance to show up for them. State Farm Arena was sold out with a capacity of 16,888. The visitors missed a chance to clinch the title in front of a big home crowd after suffering back-to-back defeats. They will now travel to Chase Center in San Francisco for Sunday's decider at 00:00 BST.

Context

Sports leagues often face arena scheduling conflicts when multiple professional teams share local facilities or event calendars during overlapping seasons. Deciding games in playoff series create intense pressure for both teams as the entire season comes down to a single final match. Teams that miss a chance to close out a series must quickly reset mentally to avoid losing momentum in the ultimate game.
