Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar defended a milk price hike of eight rupees on Thursday, stating the decision aims to support dairy farmers and prevent losses.
Farmers
Following a Cabinet meeting approving the increase, the Chief Minister explained that costs for input, milk packaging, and transportation have all risen over the past year. He noted that although there was a demand to raise the price by twelve to fifteen rupees, the government settled on this amount after consultations. He added that lawmakers across party lines in both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council had requested a milk price increase.
Opposition
In response, Leader of Opposition R. Ashok criticized the State government for adding financial pressure on the public. He questioned if raising essential goods prices and adding taxes formed the Congress government guarantee to residents. Furthermore, he warned the administration that a protest would follow.
Context
Dairy price revisions are common policy measures used by state governments to balance rising production costs for farmers against consumer affordability. Such decisions frequently spark political friction between ruling parties and opposition groups over the cost of living.
