Chinese investors have sold a net HK$24 billion ($3.1 billion) of Hong Kong‑listed shares through the Stock Connect link from Oct 23 to Oct 26, the fastest pull‑back in more than five years and on track for the largest monthly outflow since 2021.
Outflow
The data, compiled by Bloomberg, show mainland traders off‑loading stocks each day of the period, reversing a long‑standing pattern of net buying that usually steadied the market during downturns.
Market Impact
The Hang Seng Index fell 6.7 % this month, set for its steepest decline since June, while the Hang Seng Tech Index is close to erasing all gains made after Beijing’s September stimulus. Technology names bore the brunt: Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp., Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and Xiaomi Corp. were among the most heavily sold.
Analyst Views
Jasmine Duan, senior investment strategist at RBC Wealth Management Asia, warned the market could slip another 10‑15 % before finding a bottom and said it remains highly sensitive to US Treasury yields and fund‑flow dynamics. Scarlett Liu, APAC equity derivatives strategist at BNP Paribas, noted investors worry about higher capex hurting margins and called several offshore tech stocks “memory losers.” Jason Lemire, CIO of Bold Wealth Partners, said a moderation in negative earnings revisions and any easing of competitive pressure would be needed to change the outlook.
Context
Mainland investors have traditionally been a key source of liquidity for Hong Kong’s equity market. Their sudden exit, combined with a weak earnings season and limited fiscal stimulus from Beijing, is pressuring valuations and amplifying the sell‑off across sectors.
