Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has frozen digital assets worth more than 2.5 billion dollars to stop them from being stolen during a security investigation. All deposits and withdrawals are temporarily suspended while security teams run checks, and the firm stated it will cover all losses.

Reactions

Changpeng Zhao, the former boss and majority shareholder of Binance, stated that the incident looks like a hack on the platform. Zhao also noted that two other crypto platforms, Tether and Circle, have frozen about 1.7 billion dollars in stolen assets. Circle chief executive Jeremy Allaire said his firm is tracking reports of a potential exploit involving Binance and has frozen more than 800 million dollars in linked assets. Tether did not immediately respond to queries about the situation.

What's Next

Binance stated that the total amount of frozen funds may still increase as its teams work with law enforcement and partners to trace and seize more assets. The company is working around the clock and plans to share a full post-mortem report once the investigation ends, while advising users to rely only on official channels for updates.

Context

Binance operates as the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by daily trading volumes. Large crypto platforms routinely freeze suspicious transactions and coordinate with stablecoin issuers like Circle and Tether to block stolen funds from being moved or cashed out during major security incidents.
