India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar landed in Atlanta on Thursday night to take part in the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting that opens on Friday. The two‑day session is being led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and will first hear Rubio’s remarks on geopolitical matters, followed by a discussion on energy supply chains and economic growth. Jaishankar’s arrival comes a day before the talks begin, and he will stay for the full agenda that aims to ease bottlenecks in energy and strengthen cooperation on shared security challenges. The US State Department said President Trump is guiding the G20 back to its original focus on boosting growth, safeguarding economic security and delivering tangible benefits for Americans. In a separate statement, the department added that the United States will partner with other G20 members to tackle crises that are upsetting the global economy, such as threats to free navigation, disruptions in food and energy supplies, and fragile supply chains. These discussions are meant to pave the way for President Trump’s G20 leaders’ summit in Miami on Dec. 14‑15. While the foreign ministers meet, the Quad ministers – representing the US, India, Japan and Australia – will hold a side meeting, marking their second gathering this year ahead of a planned leaders’ summit that the US is expected to host in the Philippines next month. After the Atlanta sessions, Jaishankar will travel to Antigua and Barbuda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting scheduled for Nov. 1‑4.
Context
The G20 serves as a forum where the world’s largest economies coordinate policies on trade, finance and security. Energy supply‑chain talks are crucial because disruptions can trigger price spikes and affect growth worldwide. The Quad’s side meeting reflects an ongoing effort by the four democracies to present a united front on regional and global issues.
