Sir Patrick Stewart, the celebrated Shakespearean stage actor who achieved global fame as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films, has died at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 86. According to a statement on his X account and from his spokesperson Kelly Bush Novak, his death on Wednesday followed a brief journey with Alzheimer's Disease and Lewy Body Dementia. Born on July 13, 1940, in Mirfield, Yorkshire, Stewart grew up in poverty with a father who returned from World War Two as an alcoholic and physically abused his mother. At age 12, a schoolteacher introduced him to Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, and acting soon became a safe space for him. He began his professional acting career at age 18 and earned wide acclaim in the 1960s as a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. He was knighted in 2010 by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. Despite initial hesitation and advice from his friend Ian McKellen to stay in theater, Stewart took the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation at age 47. The show ran for seven seasons from 1987 to 1994, spawning multiple films and the later streaming series Star Trek: Picard. He initially balked at playing the wheelchair-using mutant Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise starting in 2000, but went on to star in over half a dozen films as the character, with an appearance in the upcoming December 2026 release Avengers: Doomsday. Tributes poured in from across the entertainment industry following the news. Fellow Star Trek star William Shatner called him a magnificent actor and friend, while George Takei noted that he inspired a new generation of fans. X-Men co-star Hugh Jackman expressed gratitude for what he learned from him, and Seth MacFarlane remembered his extensive voice work on animated series like Family Guy and American Dad. Marvel Studios also released a statement mourning his passing.
