Flood fears are easing along the Sankosh River as water levels start to go down following a glacial lake outburst in neighbouring Bhutan. The incident took place at Shintaphu Lake on Friday, prompting authorities to issue safety alerts in multiple parts of Assam and West Bengal. Kokrajhar District Commissioner Pankaj Chakravarty visited the river banks and stated that the water is receding, lowering the immediate risk of severe waterlogging in vulnerable zones. State and national disaster response teams remain stationed in the area to jump into action if the situation changes unexpectedly. Assam Chief Minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma noted that the state government is keeping a close watch on the situation, with special attention on Kokrajhar and Dhubri districts. Officials are maintaining regular contact with disaster relief agencies while urging local residents to follow official updates closely.
Context
Glacial lake outburst floods happen when water builds up behind a weak natural dam of ice or rock, suddenly breaking through and rushing down mountain valleys into rivers below. Because these events happen quickly in remote Himalayan terrain, downstream regions must rely on rapid communication and emergency readiness to protect riverside communities.
