Director Karthik Subbaraj Reveals Behind-the-Scenes Troubles and Casting Regrets for His 2016 Film Iraivi

Director Karthik Subbaraj has shared new details about the major controversies and budget struggles that faced his 2016 film Iraivi. The trouble started because the movie featured a villain who was a producer. A real person in the film business felt the character was based on him and complained to the Tamil Nadu Film Producers Council. This led to a threat of a red card and orders to pull the movie out of theatres.

Producer Feud

The movie's own backers, CV Kumar and KE Gnanavel Raja, pulled away from the project at the time. They stated they had not seen the final cut before release. The crisis ended only after a Council member arranged a private screening for everyone involved. The Council then decided the villainous character did not target any specific person and let the film stay in cinemas. Subbaraj noted that just like police officers or doctors cannot object to being shown as villains, the same rule applies to film producers.

Budget and Cast

Apart from the industry dispute, the director spoke about the film's financial struggles and star-heavy cast. Starring Vijay Sethupathi, Bobby Simha, and SJ Suryah, the movie brought high expectations after Subbaraj's earlier hits Pizza and Jigarthanda. However, it only earned a mixed initial response and failed to match its heavy budget. Subbaraj admitted that hiring multiple big stars pushed salaries up too high. He also noted that people felt Vijay Sethupathi and SJ Suryah should have swapped roles, and that Sethupathi's tragic ending hurt the box office return.

Context

Film industry councils often mediate disputes between creators and trade bodies when content sparks protests or legal complaints. High production costs driven by star salaries can create heavy financial pressure for directors trying to balance creative choices with commercial returns.
