UPDATE - follow-up to Keralam Health Minister to visit Attappady amid infant deaths; expert team begins probe: Two specialized groups have arrived in Attappady to investigate the recent rise in infant fatalities within tribal settlements.

Official Visits

Health Minister K. Muraleedharan scheduled a personal visit to the region on Saturday to inspect local treatment facilities. He planned to meet with doctors, medical staff, and ground-level workers at both the Kottathara Tribal Speciality Hospital and the Agali community health centre.

Investigation Teams

The inquiry involves personnel from two separate state branches. State Tribal Health nodal officer Harikumar, National Health Mission maternal and child health nodal officer Joy John, and Assistant Director Lipsy Paul represent the first group. Meanwhile, a seven-member specialist panel from state medical colleges covers fields like genetics, pediatric care, and infectious diseases under the leadership of SAT Hospital superintendent I. Riaz.

Ground Assessment

These medical professionals are visiting local hamlets and healthcare facilities to directly examine every pregnant woman and young child under five years old. Their mandate includes auditing all child fatalities recorded this year, evaluating mobile medical units, and checking the nutrition center. The committee must deliver its findings and recommendations within seven days.

Political Reaction

Communist Party of India state secretary Binoy Viswam criticized the administration, stating that officials have not found permanent solutions despite ten infant deaths occurring over four months. He described medical access for tribal residents as a constitutional duty rather than charity, while accusing the leadership of neglecting vulnerable populations.

Context

Attappady is a remote tribal region in Keralam that has faced recurring challenges regarding maternal and child nutrition over the years. Specialized medical interventions and nutritional rehabilitation centers are frequently deployed by state authorities to address these persistent healthcare gaps in remote communities.
