Salman Khan is being considered for a pivotal police‑officer role in the upcoming sequel ‘Khalnayak Returns’, which could reunite him with Sanjay Dutt. Mid‑Day reports that filmmaker Subhash Ghai and his writing team are shaping the cop character with Khan in mind, but no casting decision has been made as the project is still at the scripting stage. The original Khalnayak, released in 1993 and directed by Ghai, featured Sanjay Dutt as the anti‑hero Ballu, with Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit in key supporting parts. The film became a cult classic, prompting the development of a sequel that is expected to bring Dutt back to the story. Sources say the envisioned police officer will be a “good Samaritan” who aids Dutt’s character, and an insider suggested that Khan would be an ideal fit for this helpful role. However, the casting remains open and will be finalized only after the screenplay is complete. Ghai told Mid‑Day that it is too early to comment on any casting, adding that the script is still being written and the final decisions will follow once it is finished. If Khan does join, ‘Khalnayak Returns’ would mark his second collaboration with Ghai after the 2008 film Yuvvraaj.

Context

The original Khalnayak is remembered for its action‑driven plot and iconic music, and sequels to cult films often aim to blend nostalgia with fresh characters. A police‑officer ally is a common device in Bollywood franchises to expand the story while keeping the core hero central.
