Launch Details
The Indian Space Research Organisation launched the NVS-03 navigation satellite from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, aboard a GSLV-F18 rocket on Friday night at 11:51 pm. This mission marks the 20th flight of the GSLV rocket and ISRO's third space launch of 2026. The 2,250-kilogram satellite lifted off from the second launch pad, with the GSLV-F18 rocket expected to deploy it into an initial Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit about 18 minutes and 40 seconds after launch. According to the mission brochure, the targeted orbit has a planned perigee of 170 kilometres, an apogee of 37,023 kilometres, and an inclination of 20.75 degrees.
Satellite Features
NVS-03 is the third second-generation satellite designed to maintain and boost the continuity of the Navigation with Indian Constellation system, serving as India's indigenous alternative to foreign networks like the U.S. GPS, Russia's GLONASS, and China's BeiDou. The spacecraft carries an indigenous atomic clock alongside procured atomic clocks, and features an L1 signal in addition to existing L5 and S-band signals. Its coverage extends over the Indian landmass and a region reaching 1,500 kilometres around the geopolitical boundary, providing accurate position, navigation, and timing services to users, trains, vehicles, and ships.
Context
India continues to develop its regional navigation system to reduce dependence on the American GPS network and secure precise timing critical for domestic sectors like banking and defense. The ongoing expansion of the NavIC constellation helps ensure reliable domestic positioning capabilities across the subcontinent and surrounding waters.
