The Belgian production "6TM" took home the prize for top European project at the Ji.hlava Documentary Film Festival on Friday. Directed by Karim Akalay and produced by Walid Bekhti, the comedy unfolds during a hot summer inside the Cité Modèle housing complex in Brussels through three distinct family plots. The narrative follows two children searching for a magic lamp to help their disabled friend avoid eviction due to broken lifts, a teen girl forming a football team with social outcasts, and a mother trying to find who stole the rain.
Awards and Jury
The festival jury praised the picture for blending magical realism with social issues to provide a fresh take on European cinema. The project received visual post-production support worth roughly 15,000 Euros from UPP, alongside sound mixing and mastering valued at 5,000 Euros from Soundaquare. Meanwhile, the top North American project prize went to "Searching for SmarterChild," directed by Lindsey Sitz and Zan Gillies and produced by Erin Williams-Weir. This project examines the 2003 online chatbot SmarterChild, looking at how users interacted with an early digital assistant and what those old conversations reveal about human nature and modern technology. The film secured a cash prize of $7,000 through a partnership with AmDocs. In addition, the festival presented the APA World Excellence Award to Danish producer Signe Byrge Sørensen for her contributions to international film.
