Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has warned of a strict police crackdown on driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Speaking to the media on Saturday, October 31, 2026, he made the announcement after visiting the family of Jayabalakrishnan, who was killed by a speeding car at Cheranalloor near Kochi. The vehicle was allegedly driven by the minor son of an additional judge. Mr. Chennithala stated that accidents caused by intoxicated drivers have become widespread in the State and are claiming the lives of innocent people. He urged the public to cooperate with the upcoming measures and warned people not to complain later. When asked about making the laws more stringent following the Cheranalloor crash, the Minister said the government would consider the matter seriously and remains committed to ensuring justice for the victim's family. "The government will remain firmly with the family and ensure that justice is delivered," said Mr. Chennithala. "Law and justice are the same for all, whether it is a judge or a common man." He noted that the police have already moved the court to cancel the bail of the minor accused. While the family is satisfied with government actions, the Minister downplayed an error in the legal appeal filed for the suspension of bail. The Ernakulam Additional District and Sessions Court had criticised the appeal application for revealing details that identified the minor. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan had earlier visited the victim's family on Friday, October 30, 2026. Jayabalakrishnan's daughter, Bhadra Keerthy, expressed confidence in the assurances given by both the Chief Minister and the Home Minister. During his visit, Mr. Chennithala was accompanied by Hibi Eden, MP, T.J. Vinod, MLA, and Kochi City District Police Chief R. Nishanthini.
