Artificial intelligence-powered search tools are becoming a stronger influence on consumer buying decisions than traditional search engines, according to a recent report by McKinsey. Globally, AI users are 3.2 times more likely to rank AI search tools as more influential than traditional search engines, and 2.6 times more likely to rank them higher than other strong influences like friends or family.

Survey Findings And Usage

Around 29 per cent of AI shoppers stated these tools were the single biggest influence on their most recent purchase, beating retailer platforms, review websites, search engines, and personal recommendations. The survey, conducted in June 2026 across 21,000 consumers in 11 markets, found that 56 per cent of consumers used standalone AI chat or search tools for shopping in the previous three months. In comparison, only 27 per cent used AI shopping assistants run by retailers. Standalone platforms led in product discovery, comparisons, and recommendations, while retailer-operated assistants held a slight edge at checkout. Fifteen per cent of AI users relied on retailer assistants to complete or help with a purchase, against 14 per cent using standalone tools, thanks to existing infrastructure for live inventory, payments, and delivery.

Consumer Preferences And Retailer Impact

Consumers are also willing to let AI finish their transactions, with 21 to 30 per cent of AI users across six leading purchase categories saying they would allow an AI tool to complete a purchase. Globally, 14 per cent of AI users have already used AI to finish a transaction, which equals 9 per cent of the general population. Eighty-one per cent of AI shoppers noted these tools helped narrow down choices, 80 per cent valued reduced scrolling and clicking, and 79 per cent said AI saved them time. McKinsey advised retailers to improve product information, pricing, inventory data, and customer protection to stay competitive as AI-led shopping grows.

Context

Consumer shopping habits have evolved as digital tools shift from simple search engines to active agents that handle research and evaluation tasks. Retailers now face the challenge of updating their digital infrastructure to remain visible to AI tools that guide consumer choices.
