Phone-maker Human Mobile Devices has launched a new 2G flip phone called the Nokia 2360 Flip, built for use by senior citizens with features like family assist, SOS, and parental control.
Features and Setup
The phone is marketed with the tagline "Simple for loved ones. Peace of mind for you." It can be set up remotely by a family member using the Family Assist app so it arrives ready to use. The Family Assist app is available for free from Google Play and the App Store. You can manage the device remotely via SMS without needing a data plan. The app lets you add contacts, set reminders, adjust the volume, and configure the SOS button. HMD notes that if details change, you can update them in seconds from wherever you are.
Emergency and Controls
To activate the SOS feature, the dedicated button must be held for three seconds. It will simultaneously call a pre-set number and text up to five emergency contacts. The phone also includes built-in parental controls. School Mode strips the device down to a clock and emergency calls only. You can allow whitelist-only calls and messages, and block individual apps like the camera or games in any combination.
Design and Availability
The device is designed for seniors with a large 2.8-inch screen featuring big icons and clear text. A 1.77-inch external screen shows caller ID before you open the phone. It also features a loud, clear loudspeaker, and users can flip to answer or close to hang up. HMD is the largest European mobile phone manufacturer, having sold over 450 million devices globally, and is the market leader in feature phones. Till the time of writing, HMD has not announced the India price, launch, or availability details for the Nokia 2360 Flip in India.
Context
Feature phones continue to serve specific segments of users, such as seniors or children, who prefer simpler devices over advanced smartphones. Companies often target these markets with specialized accessibility options and physical controls like big buttons and loud speakers. Remote management tools help family members assist older users who may find complex phone settings difficult to navigate on their own.
