Aston Villa is launching legal action against TV pundit and former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher following his comments that the club will never be Manchester United. Chairman Nassef Sawiris signed a social media statement released by the club on Friday condemning the remarks as unacceptable insults aimed at the team and its supporters. The club stated they will not let anyone block their rise in English and European football.

The Podcast Remarks

The dispute began when Carragher spoke on the Stick to Football podcast about the football food chain and Manchester United manager Michael Carrick facing pressure due to poor results. Carragher suggested that Villa manager Unai Emery would fancy the United job, arguing that big clubs naturally take talent from sides below them just as Real Madrid once took Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United. He told Villa fans to shut up and asserted that Aston Villa will never be Manchester United. Following severe backlash online, Carragher defended himself on social media by stating his remarks were a joke after receiving heavy criticism from Villa fans.

Carragher's Clarification

Carragher later expanded on his views on the Overlap Daily podcast by calling Emery the best manager in the league and noting that Manchester United should ask the question if they want top talent. He insisted he never claimed Emery would actually move to United, explaining that his comments simply addressed a manager's personal ego when told a club is their level. He added that the entire situation had grown arms and legs and that his foul-mouthed retort to fans on social media was done in jest because his timeline was flooded with complaints.

Context

Jamie Carragher works as a football pundit for Sky Sports and CBS after retiring from his playing career in 2013. Unai Emery previously managed clubs such as Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain before taking charge at Aston Villa and winning the Europa League in Istanbul in 2026.
