Marnus Labuschagne sets unwanted record as Australia's new generation steps up in Cape Town

Confirmed by a second source: Fox Sports
Marnus Labuschagne has gone 48 consecutive Test innings without a century, setting a new record for a batter in Australia's top four. During day two of the decisive third Test in Cape Town, the 32-year-old lasted five deliveries without scoring before nicking a ball from spinner Simon Harmer to slip. Former Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie said on ABC that no player will likely be given that length of time again, adding that Australia needs to look elsewhere. Former batter Ricky Ponting previously called for his removal in August, noting he cannot score off the back foot. Meanwhile, former opener David Warner told Fox Sports that Labuschagne has baffled himself by trying to correct his technique. Since his last Test century at Old Trafford in 2023, Labuschagne averages 24.77. Earlier in his career, from the 2019 Ashes until England's next quest for the urn, he averaged 65. Across his first 42 Tests, he averaged 54.59 with 11 centuries, but his last 26 Tests have yielded no hundreds.
## The New Guard
With Steve Smith ruled out due to a neck injury, and both Travis Head and Labuschagne dismissed early as Australia fell to 58-2 in reply to South Africa's 329, younger players rescued the innings. Matt Renshaw, Cameron Green, and Josh Inglis each hit fifties to put the tourists ahead, with Renshaw scoring 74 after previously making a career-best 190 in Durban.
## Context
Long batting slumps at the international level routinely prompt intense scrutiny from former players and selectors regarding team selection. Australia's ongoing transition relies on younger batters stepping up when senior players are sidelined by injury or poor form.
