Theatre personality Addanda C. Cariappa was attacked and had ink smeared on his face by a group of protesters in Bengaluru on Saturday. The incident took place at Suchitra Film Academy in Banashankari during the staging of the play Gandhi Hatheya Kicchu.
The Protest and Allegations
The play, which focuses on Mahatma Gandhi's assassination, was organised by Rangabhoomi Trust, Kodagu, and written and directed by Mr. Cariappa. A group of protesters led by Kushal Hanumegowda confronted him over the play's content. A complaint signed by 14 people was later filed with the Banashankari police. The complainants accused Mr. Cariappa of spreading false information and portraying Gandhi as anti-national and a slave of Muslims.
Specific Objections
The group stated that the production tried to blame Gandhi and the Congress party for the Partition of India. They also objected to references regarding the payment of 50 crore rupees to Pakistan and claimed audience members were made to raise slogans condemning Gandhi. Furthermore, the complaint alleged that tickets for the Bengaluru show were sold illegally in Mysuru on the black market, and that Mr. Cariappa used vulgar language when questioned about it.
Context
Plays and cultural productions touching on sensitive historical topics often spark sharp public debates and protests in India. Police complaints and formal investigations are common avenues when groups accuse public figures of hurting sentiments or spreading offensive content.
