UPDATE - follow-up to France heads into third weekend of protests as youth-led rallies sweep Europe: Clashes broke out between police and protesters in Paris on Saturday as nationwide demonstrations continued over the rising cost of living and inequality.

Turnout And Routes

French authorities estimated that 320,000 people protested nationwide, which is fewer than the 500,000 counted on October 17 and the 410,000 recorded on October 24. Organisers put their turnout figures much higher. In Paris, 70,000 people joined the main protest. Police moved this march outside the city centre to outer boulevards from Porte de Bagnolet to Porte de Charenton following a court battle, after unions and student groups lost their legal challenge against the restrictions. President Emmanuel Macron had said on October 26 that marches would stay out of city centres to protect shops. Police also barred entry to Place de la Republique and Les Halles from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Warnings And Curfews

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez warned of a very high risk of disorder, especially after dark on Halloween. Authorities deployed 70,000 police and gendarmes nationwide. Unaccompanied minors faced a separate 9 p.m. curfew around the Champs-Elysees, although a Paris court suspended an earlier curfew on minors on October 28 as an illegal infringement of movement. The movement began with high school students protesting school conditions before broadening into anger over living costs, organized by the Yellow Vest movement, labour unions like the General Confederation of Labour, and students.

Context

These widespread protests reflect deep public frustration over economic pressures and educational conditions in France. Similar youth-led demonstrations and online mobilization efforts are also appearing in other European countries.
