Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national and former SpiceJet pilot, was attacked inside the cockpit of flydubai flight FZ 1073 on September 30, 2026. The aircraft was operating from Dubai to Tel Aviv when the altercation occurred. On‑duty flydubai crew quickly secured the cabin and diverted the plane to Tabuk Airport (TUU) in Saudi Arabia, where it landed without further incident. All passengers and crew were accounted for and reported safe. flydubai’s press release described the event as “an altercation” and said the motives remain unknown pending a formal investigation. The airline did not comment on the identity of the assailant. The Indian Embassy in Riyadh confirmed that Captain Machchhar is hospitalized in Tabuk city and is in stable condition. The embassy said it is monitoring his health, staying in touch with his family, and will coordinate assistance with Saudi authorities. No official update on his injuries has been provided yet. The flight’s safe diversion and the crew’s swift response prevented any further harm to those on board.
Context
Cockpit security incidents are rare but taken very seriously by airlines and regulators. An attack on a pilot can jeopardize flight safety, which is why crews are trained to isolate threats and land at the nearest suitable airport. The ongoing investigation will determine what triggered the clash and whether any security lapses occurred.
