Lovlina Borgohain secured a spot in the women's 75kg final after defeating the current 70kg world champion, Natalya Bogdanova, by a 3-2 margin on Wednesday. This victory makes her the first female boxer from India to qualify for consecutive Asian Games title matches, following Mary Kom's achievement in 2014.
The Bout
Bogdanova used her left-handed stance to apply close-range pressure and took the opening round. Borgohain adjusted by fighting from a distance in the second round, sweeping all five judge scorecards at ten to nine. After splitting the third round, Borgohain secured the victory when two of the remaining three judges awarded her the fourth round. India's women's foreign head coach Santiago Nieva noted that the opponent pushed close in early on, but praised Borgohain for using her reach effectively with straight punches and left hooks once she moved outward. Parveen Hooda is the only other Indian woman to reach a final at the current Asian Games.
Next Match and Other Results
Borgohain will compete against China's Ziyi Bao for the gold medal. In other Indian semi-final matches, Commonwealth Games title holder Priya Ghanghas lost 1-4 to former world champion Chengyu Yang of China in the 60kg category. Meanwhile, Kapil Pokhriya fell 1-4 to reigning world champion Turabek Khabibullaev of Uzbekistan in the 90kg event.
Context
Success in continental multi-sport events like the Asian Games requires boxers to adapt quickly to different fighting styles, such as left-handed opponents who excel at close quarters. Maintaining distance and using superior footwork remain key tactical responses for tall athletes against aggressive fighters in amateur boxing.
