Eight major sites in Hyderabad lit up in pink on Wednesday night. This started the 18th yearly 'Paint the City Pink' drive by the Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation. The event marks the start of International Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla and surgeon P. Raghu Ram joined the launch event at Lok Bhavan, which was also bathed in pink light. The drive started back in 2009 and has run every single year without a break, even continuing through the COVID-19 pandemic. Foundation founding director P. Raghu Ram noted that Hyderabad stands alone globally for having multiple famous structures glowing in the pink color on a single evening for this many years in a row.
Context
Illuminating famous public buildings in bright colors is a common global method used by health groups to draw public attention to major health campaigns. Breast cancer awareness drives aim to encourage regular check-ups and early medical checks, which doctors say are very important for successful treatment.
