UPDATE - follow-up to Flydubai pilot stabbed in cockpit is Indian, flew with SpiceJet for 11 years before joining Dubai airline: Indian captain Smit Machchhar is now in a stable condition after undergoing surgery in Saudi Arabia following the cockpit attack on the Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
What Happened
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 carrying about 170 people on board experienced a sudden drop in altitude, plunging from 34,000 feet to about 16,600 feet in roughly a minute as an altercation broke out between the pilots. Flight-tracking data showed the transponder broadcasting code 7700 for a general emergency and 7500 for unlawful interference, prompting Israel to scramble fighter jets.
Intervention And Landing
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the wounded captain opened the cockpit door so others could enter. A passenger, a relief pilot, and on-duty Flydubai crew members rushed into the cockpit to overpower the attacker, identified as an Omani national serving as co-pilot. The crew secured the aircraft and diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where the plane landed safely and authorities arrested the co-pilot.
Context
Commercial aviation operates under strict security protocols where cockpit access is tightly controlled, making in-flight altercations extremely rare and dangerous. Flight crews undergo specialized training to handle emergency situations, coordinate with ground air traffic control, and manage sudden security threats while in mid-air.
