UPDATE - follow-up to Smit Machchhar: Who is the Indian flydubai pilot hailed a 'hero': Captain Smit Machchhar is recovering in a hospital in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after being stabbed mid-air by his Omani co-pilot on a Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight. The September 30, 2026 incident on flydubai flight FZ1073 caused the jet to plunge nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds. Global leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and US President Donald Trump praised Captain Machchhar's actions, with Mr. Modi stating the pilot's quick thinking helped prevent a potential disaster that could have resembled a 9/11-style event.

The Rescue

Covered in blood on the cockpit floor, the Mumbai-native pilot managed to activate the release mechanism to open the cockpit door. This allowed passengers and crew to enter and overpower the co-pilot. Two flydubai pilots traveling as passengers then helped land the aircraft safely in Tabuk. Passenger Yaniv, who helped steady the plane and was later greeted by Mr. Netanyahu, credited watching the TV show Air Crash Investigation for helping him intervene. The 174 passengers on board, including 27 children, later reached Tel Aviv on a replacement aircraft.

Pilot Background

Captain Machchhar has logged nearly 9,750 flying hours over a career of about 15 years. He initially studied textile engineering and management at Mumbai's Welingkar Institute to join his family's business before discovering aviation at a seminar. He previously spent over 11 years at SpiceJet, rising to line training captain before joining flydubai in 2022. His parents have since traveled to Saudi Arabia, and authorities are currently investigating the motive behind the co-pilot's attack.

Context

Commercial aviation relies on strict cockpit security protocols and multi-crew coordination to manage rare in-flight emergencies. Sudden altitude drops and crew incapacitation require immediate physical intervention to stabilize the aircraft. Investigators examine flight data recorders and cockpit voice logs to determine the exact sequence of events during such airborne incidents.
