New tournament format and venue plans set for 2027 ODI World Cup

Tournament Format

The tournament begins with a Super Series involving teams ranked 12th, 13th, and 14th in qualification, where only the winner advances. That team joins 11 other qualified nations in two groups of six for 30 matches, followed by a Super 7 stage and semifinals. South Africa and Zimbabwe qualified automatically as hosts, but co-host Namibia must play qualifiers because they are not a Full-Member ICC nation. Eight direct qualification spots will be decided by ODI rankings as of September 30, 2026, leaving teams like West Indies and Ireland to play in early 2027 qualifiers.

Suresh Raina expressed strong confidence in India's chances with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the squad. Meanwhile, Kohli told JioStar that this will be his final World Cup for India. Rohit noted that the intensity of a 50-over World Cup equals about 10 games at a T20 level in foreign conditions.

Pitch And Rule Updates

South African venue curators are installing an Exchangeable Pitch System at five of their eight host grounds to prevent pitch wear from heavy usage. The ICC also approved changes to the T20 World Cup structure, new ball size specifications for women's and junior cricket, rules for pink ball use in daytime Tests by mutual agreement, and a five-run penalty for batters who waste time a third time.
