The visit took place a day after an INDIA bloc meeting in Delhi and ahead of his plan to raise these concerns in Parliament.
Official Reactions
At a press conference with the affected families, Rahul Gandhi blamed the Madhya Pradesh government for the deaths, calling it a total government failure. The Congress party stated that more than 30 tribal children have died in the area due to malnutrition and diseases like malaria and measles. Gandhi also highlighted a lack of basic government support in healthcare, education, and employment, alongside unresolved issues involving MGNREGA, the Forest Rights Act, and land rights. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh also criticized the ruling party, alleging that tribal communities are ignored except when their land and resources are needed.
Context
Balaghat is a district in Madhya Pradesh with a significant tribal population that often faces socio-economic challenges including access to healthcare and education. Issues related to tribal welfare, land rights, and basic infrastructure frequently become points of political debate between the ruling party and the opposition in India.
