Liam Lawson and Max Verstappen have both received a one-place grid penalty for the Mexican Grand Prix following an on-track collision at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. The FIA stewards handed down the punishment after summoning both drivers following the second practice session. According to the official judgment, Verstappen was on a preparation lap while Lawson was on a cool-down lap approaching turn 12. Both drivers admitted their moves were unnecessary and clumsy, and stewards escalated the penalty from a formal warning to a grid position penalty due to warnings given at the earlier team managers meeting.

Practice Results

Before the incident, Charles Leclerc topped both Friday practice sessions for Ferrari, setting a best lap of 1m 17.827s in the second session. Lando Norris finished second, just 0.103s behind Leclerc, after sitting out the first session. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli placed fourth for Mercedes, sitting 0.217s off the pace as he seeks to become the sport's youngest champion. Meanwhile, Liam Lawson secured ninth place in the second session with a time of 1m 18.455s, finishing behind his Racing Bulls teammate Arvid Lindblad, who took seventh. Sergio Pérez marked his 300th start at his home track, while Ryo Hirakawa made his debut as Formula One's second oldest rookie at 32.

Context

Formula One practice sessions occasionally see traffic disputes between drivers on hot laps and cool-down laps, which team managers regularly try to address during briefings. The high altitude of Mexico City also places unique demands on car cooling and engine performance during the race weekend. Grid penalties in F1 require drivers to start further back than their qualifying position, directly affecting their race strategy.
