Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah is expected to visit India around November 22 for his first bilateral foreign trip since taking office in March.
Preparations
Indian foreign secretary Vikram Misri will travel to Kathmandu on November 4 to prepare for the trip, following the arrival of India's ambassador-designate, Sudhakar Dalela, early next week. Misri will review bilateral ties and firm up the visit's agenda with senior Nepalese officials. Misri previously planned a May visit that was put off after Shah reportedly disagreed to a meeting, but several other Nepalese ministers, including foreign minister Shisir Khanal and RSP leader Rabi Lamichhane, have visited India in recent months.
Key Issues And Talks
Discussions will focus on trade, economic ties, air, land, and digital connectivity, border security, education, employment, and current bilateral pacts. The talks may also bring forward movement on India-backed development projects and new economic assistance for post-flood reconstruction. Nepal's foreign minister Shisir Khanal previously stated that his government wants to move relations away from geopolitical friction toward development diplomacy, while handling border issues regarding Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh, and Kalapani through existing mechanisms.
Context
High-level diplomatic visits between India and Nepal serve to maintain close economic, cultural, and political ties between the two neighbouring countries. These regular exchanges help both nations manage regional cooperation and address bilateral matters smoothly.
