48-year-old disabled woman Akila died after a fire ripped through her apartment in Periyar Nagar, Korattur, early on Sunday. The blaze started when an air‑conditioner and a refrigerator, along with other appliances, exploded. Police suspect an electrical short circuit triggered the explosion. The fire spread rapidly, filling rooms with thick smoke within minutes. Neighbors heard the crackling and called emergency services at about 12:30 am. Firefighters used ladders and hoses to contain the flames before they reached adjacent units. Akila’s husband Ramani, 55, and their son Karthik, 25, woke to the flames while sleeping. Both escaped but suffered burn injuries and were taken to hospital. Paramedics treated Ramani and Karthik for second‑degree burns before sending them to the government medical college hospital. Rescue crews from the Korattur police and Fire and Rescue Services arrived quickly, aided by local residents, and pulled the injured family members out. The Rajamangalam Police have opened an investigation into the incident.
