Six Indian tourists, including two women, are stranded due to heavy snowfall in the Shey-Phoksundo National Park area of Nepal since Saturday afternoon on October 31, 2026.
What Happened
The group had gone to the Dho area in Ward Number 8 of Shey Phoksundo Rural Municipality, which was covered in heavy snow. The tourists ventured into the area despite warnings from security personnel and their accompanying Nepali guide. They left the guide and proceeded towards the lake area despite the heavy snow, leading to a disruption in communication on Saturday night. The guide contacted the District Administration Office in Dolpa on Saturday evening to report that the tourists might be stranded, and communication was completely cut off by Sunday morning. Dolpa Chief District Officer Junu Dhakal clarified that they are not missing because authorities have located the area where they are stuck.
Rescue Operations
Authorities have located the area where the tourists are stranded, and an Army helicopter is arriving to rescue them. Security personnel are being mobilised for the operation. The stranded individuals have been identified as Moumita Halder, Piyali Koley, Jajla Trivedi Kumar, Aditya Singha, Diplina Bishwas, and Rajesh De, according to a press release from the District Administration Office in Dolpa.
Context
Shey Phoksundo Lake, located in the rural municipality, is Nepal's deepest lake at an altitude of 3,600 metres with an estimated depth of 145 metres. High-altitude mountain regions often experience sudden and severe weather changes, making remote trekking paths risky when safety warnings are ignored.
