Urban local body elections in the Tirupati district wrapped up peacefully, though voter turnout dropped significantly due to apparent urban apathy.

Polling Numbers

Tirupati recorded the lowest poll share in the entire district at 45.26 percent by around 5 p.m. Out of 2,90,492 total voters in the city, only 1,31,476 came out to vote. This low turnout stands out given that the city is home to half a dozen universities, the IIT, IISER, prominent industries, and an educated population of academicians, retired bureaucrats, and technocrats. Other towns in the district saw much higher participation. Puttur led the numbers with 75.57 percent, followed by Naidupeta at 69.99 percent, Venkatagiri at 67.04 percent, and Sullurpeta at 63.72 percent. Across all five urban local bodies covering 202 wards, the district registered an overall voting percentage of 53.65 percent, with 2,40,052 out of 4,47,461 voters casting their ballots.

Official Monitoring

District officials closely tracked the voting process. District Collector S. Venkateswar and District Revenue Officer G. Narasimhulu kept a watch on developments across polling stations through webcasting. At the same time, Election Expenditure Observer Mahaboob Basha visited polling booths in Venkatagiri, Sullurpeta, and Naidupeta to direct officials to strictly follow expenditure monitoring guidelines.

Context

Elections for urban local bodies decide the local leadership that manages civic services like water, sanitation, and roads in towns and cities. Low voter turnout in urban areas is a common trend in many parts of the country, where residents in major cities often participate less in local polls compared to rural voters.
