State government employees in Telangana are again asking for a five-day work week to help the state deal with the dry weather caused by El Nino. The Joint Action Committee of Telangana Employees, Gazetted Officers, Teachers, Workers and Pensioners gave a formal letter about this demand to Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju.

Benefits and Timings

The employee groups stated that working five days a week will save water and power, cut down road pollution, and improve how well staff members work. They also pointed out that the move will not cost the government extra money and will actually help the state treasury. Under their suggested plan, office hours would run from 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. every day, adding up to seven and a half hours daily.

Comparison with Current Rules

Right now, staff work six days a week from 10.30 a.m. to 5 p.m., which is six and a half hours a day and 39 hours a week in total. To match the new plan, employees suggested they can work one extra hour once a week. This schedule would match the rules used in Central Government offices.

Context

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has already asked citizens to conserve water, power, and fuel while taking up energy-saving steps. State employees argue that moving to a five-day office schedule supports these same conservation goals by cutting down daily travel and office resource use.
