UPDATE - follow-up to Four die of suspected suffocation while cleaning waste chamber in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain hotel: Four people died after inhaling toxic fumes inside a food-waste tank at a private property in Madhya Pradesh. The accident happened around half past ten on a Saturday night at Shri Ganga Hotel situated along the Ujjain-Dewas road.

What Happened

Two labourers climbed into the overground storage tank containing leftover food scraps to clear a blockage, but they collapsed immediately after entering. Two more men stepped inside to pull them out, and all four individuals ultimately perished inside the pit. Officials believe a poisonous gas leak combined with slippery sludge trapped the victims. The dead include three local residents—Wahid Khan, Nitin Binarwan, and Kamlesh Tamboli—alongside hotel supervisor Manoj Meena from Jhalawar in Rajasthan. Police officers and hotel staff eventually forced open an iron grill on the tank to retrieve the bodies, though emergency teams could not revive the victims using cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Investigation And Aid

Local law enforcement and municipal authorities have started a formal probe into the incident. Investigators noted that the workers wore no safety gear when entering the pit, and the property lacked a mandatory civic cleaning receipt. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed grief over the accident and announced financial compensation of four lakh rupees for each grieving family.

Context

Industrial accidents in sanitation and waste management often occur due to a lack of proper safety equipment and toxic gas accumulation in confined spaces. Authorities generally require specialized breathing gear and prior clearance before anyone enters such storage structures.
