India's food market, valued between $550 billion and $600 billion, is expanding at a 6‑7% compound annual rate, driven by rising incomes and urban migration, an official from the food processing ministry said. Food processing contributes roughly 8% of manufacturing's gross value added and is the second‑largest source of jobs in that sector, creating more value for farmers and drawing investment. The government aims to boost processing across all 16 broad sub‑sectors to ensure farmers capture greater returns, a goal highlighted at the Anuga Select India and Anuga FoodTec India 2026 exhibition in Mumbai. Key focus areas include cereals, meat, fruits, vegetables and dairy; the country ranks second worldwide in fruit and vegetable output and leads in milk production. Fisheries, marine products and animal husbandry also receive policy support, while healthier and plant‑based foods are emerging innovation zones. Protein intake was flagged as especially important given India's large vegetarian base, underscoring the need to meet growing demand. Tarun Bajaj of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority noted that exports of agricultural and processed food reached $53 billion in 2025‑26, placing India among the top ten global exporters. Export growth persists despite geopolitical strains, with rice, meat, marine items, coffee and tea leading the mix, supported by improved infrastructure and farmer performance. German and Dutch officials stressed the importance of resilient supply chains, stable trade rules, and international collaboration, citing the newly concluded India‑EU free‑trade pact that opens a market of about two billion people. The processing industry hit roughly $382 billion in FY25 and is projected to near $689 billion by FY34, with processed foods now making up over 20% of agricultural exports.

Context

The sector’s rapid expansion reflects India’s shifting consumer tastes toward value‑added and protein‑rich foods, while government policies and trade deals aim to integrate the market more closely with global supply chains.
