Denza, the luxury electric vehicle brand owned by Chinese carmaker BYD, has officially confirmed its upcoming entry into the Indian market through a social media teaser. ## Lineup And Pricing The brand will position its vehicles above the current BYD lineup, targeting price points starting above Rs 80 lakh. The initial launch rollout will feature two primary vehicles: the Z9 GT and the D9. The Z9 GT is a four-door shooting brake expected to cost between Rs 1.2 crore and Rs 1.5 crore. The D9 is a large luxury MPV expected to carry a price tag of around Rs 90 lakh to compete against rivals like the Toyota Vellfire and MG M9. According to Rushlane, both models will enter India as completely built units and sell through exclusive showrooms.

Vehicle Specifications

The Z9 GT packs a 122.5kWh battery powering three electric motors that generate a combined 1,156hp. It reaches 100kph from a standstill in a claimed 2.7 seconds and offers a WLTP-rated range of 600km. It supports ultra-fast charging up to 1,500kW, allowing a 10 to 97 percent charge in nine minutes. Meanwhile, the India-spec D9 is expected to feature a 103kWh battery pack paired with a front motor delivering 313hp and 360Nm of torque, yielding a 520km WLTP range.

Features And Background

The Z9 GT includes rear-wheel steering for maneuvers like crab walking and a 360-degree compass turn, alongside a triple-screen dashboard, Level 2+ ADAS, and a 20-speaker Devialet sound system. The D9 features a 2+2+3 seating arrangement with second-row captain's chairs offering heating, ventilation, and massage functions, alongside three-zone climate control and a Dynaudio sound system. Denza started in 2010 as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz Group, before Mercedes-Benz transferred its remaining shares entirely to BYD by 2024.

Context

The expansion of foreign luxury EV brands into India highlights the gradual shift of premium automakers toward high-end electric mobility options. Brands often utilize imported vehicle routes initially to test consumer demand before considering local assembly. This entry broadens the choices available to buyers looking past traditional European and Japanese luxury nameplates.
