Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma and Kumkum Mohod secured India's first-ever women's team recurve gold at the Asian Games by defeating South Korea five to three in Okazaki, Japan. The victory brought an end to South Korea's twenty-eight-year dominance in the event, a winning streak stretching back to nineteen ninety-eight that included seven consecutive gold medals.
The Journey
The three Indian athletes reached the top of the podium despite challenging personal backgrounds. Twenty-eight-year-old Ankita grew up in Kolkata where her father delivered milk starting at four in the morning. Nineteen-year-old Kirti comes from a farming family in Haryana and relied on a loan secured by her father, Vijay Kumar, to purchase her equipment. Seventeen-year-old Kumkum hails from Amravati, where her father, Anil, makes cardboard boxes for sweet shops and previously practiced with second-hand bows. Each athlete trained intensively, shooting four hundred arrows daily.
The Match
The title match unfolded against a powerful wind that forced the Indian team to improvise by aiming toward the eight or nine o'clock positions on the target face to compensate for the drift. Mid-match pressure adjustments also proved vital when team order was shifted to help Kirti recover her form after early struggles. After the opening two sets left the score tied at two points each, Korea faltered in the third set with three consecutive eights, allowing India to claim the set and take a four to two lead. In the final set, a review upgraded Kirti's first arrow from an eight to a nine, securing the tied set needed to seal the five to three victory.
Context
South Korea has long stood as the global powerhouse in archery, making consecutive gold medals at major international competitions an expected standard for their national teams. Archery matches are heavily influenced by environmental factors like wind speed, which requires competitors to make split-second calculations rather than relying solely on technique. Overturning such a historic winning streak highlights the rising competitiveness of Indian athletes on the international multi-sport stage.
