Indira Gandhi Zoological Park in Visakhapatnam is hosting a week of conservation events and competitions from October 2 to 8. This year's theme is 'Connecting Habitats, Thriving Wildlife', focusing on habitat protection and human coexistence with nature.
Competitions and Workshops
The programme opened with a drawing contest at the Zoo Bioscope, featuring groups from school children to postgraduate students. An elocution event follows on October 3, while International Zoo Keeper's Day on October 4 brings a photography contest for keepers and a fancy dress event for children aged three to 12. Later sessions cover wildlife management, human-animal coexistence challenges, and a poster presentation. A hands-on butterfly workshop on October 7 will teach participants about butterfly rearing and host plant identification.
Zoo Details and Contact
Zoo curator G Mangamma notes that the facility records over 120 butterfly species across its premises, with around 30 species found in its butterfly park. Interested persons can contact the zoo education officer at 7893632900 or email igzpeo@gmail.com for details.
Context
Zoos often use public awareness weeks and educational programmes to help visitors understand local biodiversity and conservation efforts. Such outreach activities aim to foster a better understanding of wildlife protection among students and the general public.
