Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on a video call with flydubai airline Captain Smit Machchhar to praise his bravery after the pilot stopped his co-pilot from crashing a Dubai-Tel Aviv flight. During the call, the Prime Minister told Captain Smit that his fast thinking stopped a major disaster and saved hundreds of lives. He remarked that Indians are people who save lives rather than take them. Captain Smit became emotional during the conversation and mentioned that the Prime Minister is his biggest idol. He shared that he kept reciting the Hanuman Chalisa to stay calm during the tense situation. The Prime Minister also spoke with the pilot's mother, Geeta Ben, and praised her for raising him with the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, while earlier speaking to his wife and parents as well. The incident happened on Wednesday when an Omani co-pilot attacked Captain Smit mid-air. The aircraft suddenly dropped 14,000 feet in 29 seconds. Even though he suffered stab injuries, the captain managed to unlock the flight deck door so passengers and crew could overpower the co-pilot. The plane landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, keeping all 174 passengers safe. Captain Smit is currently recovering from his injuries in a Tabuk hospital, according to reports from The Hindu.
