Parveen Hooda Secures Asian Games Gold for India After Hard-Fought Bout

Indian boxer Parveen Hooda claimed the gold medal at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya on Friday. She triumphed through a close 3-2 split decision against Chen Nien-chin, who previously earned a bronze at the Paris Olympics and represents Chinese Taipei. To reach the final stage, Parveen earned a clear 5-0 victory over Li Shu from China in the 65kg semifinal round. This gold finish marks a major turnaround for Parveen, whose previous bronze medal from an earlier edition was stripped when the International Testing Agency handed her a 22-month suspension for a missed drug test notice. She now joins elite company as only the third female boxer from India to contest an Asian Games final, following MC Mary Kom who took the title in 2014 and Lovlina Borgohain who secured a silver medal previously.
Team Performance
India's boxing squad has already surpassed its previous medal count by locking in six podium finishes in Aichi-Nagoya. Priya Ghanghas in the 60kg category, Kapil Pokhariya in the 90kg division, and Narender Berwal in the over-90kg class each collected bronze medals. Meanwhile, Narender Berwal was scheduled to compete for a spot in the final later on the same day.
Context
These continental results follow a strong run by Indian fighters at the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow last month. The historic high-water mark for Indian boxing at the Asian Games remains the Guangzhou 2010 event, where the team brought home a total of nine medals including two golds.
